Khadaan is a 2024 Indian Bengali-language action thriller film written and directed by Soojit Rino Dutta. Jointly produced by Nispal Singh and Dev under the banners of Surinder Films and Dev Entertainment Ventures, the film features Dev in dual roles, alongside Jisshu Sengupta, Barkha Bisht, Idhika Paul, and Anirban Chakrabarti. Set against the backdrop of the coal mines in the Damodar Valley, the story delves into themes of ambition, betrayal, and redemption.

Plot Summary

The narrative unfolds in two timelines:

• 1997: Shyam Mahato, after losing everything in Bangladesh, illegally migrates to India and becomes a laborer in the coal mines of the Damodar Valley. There, he befriends Mohan Das, a Vaishnavite. Together, they gain control over the coal syndicate, challenging local MLA Shehzad Siddique. Shyam becomes a messiah for the poor laborers, especially the local adivasi community, by opposing land grabs and sharing 20% of the coal mine's profits with them. However, after killing a police officer during a confrontation, Shyam is imprisoned and mysteriously dies in jail.

• 2024: Mohan, now a wealthy industrialist, invites Shyam's son, Madhu, a coal transporter, to join his syndicate. As Madhu rises in the ranks, he uncovers the truth about his father's death—that Mohan, driven by jealousy, had murdered Shyam by drugging and strangling him, staging it as a suicide. Enraged, Madhu kills Mohan in the same manner, taking over as the unchallenged crime boss of the coal mines.

Released on 20 December 2024, Khadaan received positive reviews for its performances, direction, script, action sequences, and musical score. The film set several box-office records for a Bengali film, overtaking those set by Dev's earlier film Chander Pahar (2013). Grossing over ₹20 crore, it became a blockbuster and emerged as the highest-grossing Bengali film of 2024 and the second highest-grossing Bengali film of all time. At the 8th Filmfare Awards Bangla, Khadaan received 14 nominations, including Best Film, Best Debut Director (Dutta), and Best Actor (Dev). 

Production

Director Soojit Rino Dutta began researching coal mining areas and their socio-political events around 2015–2016. The screenplay was completed by playwright Biswaroop Biswas, with dialogues by Dutta. Dev learned the Santhali accent for the film, which is set against the backdrop of Raniganj in the Asansol region. The film's music was composed by Rathijit Bhattacharjee, Savvy, and Nilayan Chatterjee, with cinematography by Shailesh Awashthi and editing by MD. Kalam. 

Future

The ending of Khadaan hints at a sequel. In an interview, Dev mentioned that Khadaan 2 will be made depending upon the reception of the first film and only if it becomes commercially successful.
